This was kind of an odd little article from Interfax in which it was stated that a renowned Russian Orthodox priest (deputy chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin...(Phew!)) called for "Orthodox guards to establish order in their locality and thus establish order throughout Russia," presumably to help out the police. Sounds a bit like under the old regime, except that instead of Orthodox guards maybe they were Komsomol members during the Soviet era. The Orthodox Church is already too intertwined with the government--a mix that places too much control and authority in the Orthodox Church on the national and local levels, to the detriment of the minority churches. This is already a problem which should not be exacerbated. See the article here: The Russian Church stands for Orthodox people's guards, Interfax-Religion.
(As odd as I find this, it is odder still that Obama himself had suggested during his campaign that the U.S. should establish a well-funded civilian national security force. I have no idea what this means and find it a rather bizarre proposal. Apparently Obama is not too anxious to spell this out and has even removed from his website the reference to this security force.)
